Event Information

GENERAL INFORMATION

  1. The start for both the Triathlon and 5K run will take place promptly at 8:00am in the area north of parking lot E near the front of Jack Brown Hall.
     
  2. The order of events will be the start with the 5K run, proceed to an 8.5 mile bike ride, and finish with a 100 yard swim.
     
  3. The attached map shows the run and bike routes in different colors.
     
  4. Triathletes, please note:  The bike route follow the same course as the 5K run for the first mile. This is a change from the previous years.
     
  5. The locker rooms in the pool area are open for your usage. Restrooms are also located in the pool area.
     
  6. Please have the necessary clothing and equipment in the transition area (bike, Helmet, shoes, etc.)
     
  7. All Triathletes must have their number marked on their body with a felt marker. Those that refuse will not be timed at the finish.
     
  8. IMPORTANT!!! You will be given a registration number with a pull tag on the bottom. The red number is to be worn during the run. The pull tag is to be pinned on the inside of the clothing you swim in. Without it, you will NOT be timed. DO NOT LOSE ANY OF THESE!!.
     
  9. A lead vehicle will lead the beginning bike riders. Police officers and volunteers will stop all traffic at intersections along the course. When on city streets you must be in the correct traffic lane. You are riding with the flow of traffic. Slower riders may find that other vehicles may also be using the traffic lanes. Be cautious and stay to the right.
     
  10. No assistance is allowed with the equipment, in the transition area or on the course.

 RUN

  1. The route for the 5K run starts in a westerly direction on a concrete walkway through the campus. Shortly after the 1 mile mark, the router turns onto a dirt pathway back in a easterly direction. Stay on the path as there may be danger of rattlesnakes in the underbrush.
     
  2. Follow the path around the northern edge of the campus you will turn south until you enter North Park Blvd. Stay in the bike lane on North Park and re-enter the campus at Coyote Drive. Follow this road to the north end of parking lot G.
     
  3. For 5K runners Only: The finish line is to the right of the bike rack area as you are re-entering the campus.
     
  4. For Triathletes: Enter the bike rack area, change into the appropriate riding gear and head west through the campus – the same beginning route as for the 5K run.
     

BIKE:

  1. You are to place your bike in the Bike rack area BEFORE the race.
     
  2. Hard helmets are MANDATORY!  YOU WILL BE DISQUALIFIED if you ride
    without a hard helmet.
  3. The bike route follows the same route as the 5K run for the first mile. However, instead of turning on the
    dirt path as the runners did, go a little further to the intersection, turn right and head towards Devi’s Canyon.
     
  4. You must travel on the same side of the road as regular automobile traffic. Be careful as there is a blind at the top of the hill. Watch your speed coming down the hill.
     
  5. Avoid drafting – Absolutely NO car drafting!
     
  6. Traffic will be stopped at intersections upon your APPROACH only, so please be cautious of side streets.
     
  7. After circling around Devil’s Canyon, you will re-enter the campus between lots B and C Use caution both because of the sharp right-angle turns, and speed bumps on campus.
     
  8. Stay on the northern edge of parking lot C. You will zigzag back onto the sidewalk portion just prior to the dormitories.
     
  9. Continue east back towards Coyote Drive. Stay to the right as slower participants may just be starting out on their bikes.
     
  10. At Coyote Drive prepare for a hard right turn out the campus to North Park Blvd. Always stay in the lane with the flow of traffic.   Caution: There are speed bumps on Coyote Drive.
     
  11. At North Park turn left and head to Electric Avenue, Where there will be a turn-around.
     
  12. Return on North Park Blvd to Coyote Drive; turn right back onto the campus. Be alert for the possibility of slow runners. Return the bike to the transition area and proceed to the swimming pool.

SWIM:

  1. Jump into the pool, DO NOT DIVE. Zigzag your way through the maze (Approximately 100 Yards).
     
  2. When you exit the pool, pull your registration tag out and hand it to the official.
     
  3. The triathlon ends at this point.

 The Awards presentation will occur upon completion of the last contestant.
